Key Takeaways: On-chain data shows BlackRock investors rotating capital from Bitcoin to Ethereum, with ETHA holdings up 196,340 ETH since July 1.

BlackRock's crypto portfolio grew $3.7 billion since July as investors rotated from Bitcoin to Ethereum, adding 196,340 ETH to ETHA.
Arkham Intelligence data shows BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) recorded a holding decline of 3,710 BTC since July 1, while ETHA's Ethereum holdings rose from 2.77 million to approximately 2.97 million coins.
With ETH trading at $1,868, BlackRock's Ethereum trove was valued at $5.54 billion, up $1.08 billion over 37 days. Bitcoin's value in the portfolio surged $2.67 billion to $47.35 billion during the same period, as BTC rose 6.5 percent from $60,128 to over $64,037 despite the 0.5 percent decline in holdings.
The rotation has pushed the ETH/BTC pair above 0.02958, up more than 5 percent since early July and breaking out of a multi-month capitulation. If BlackRock investors maintain the same strategy, the pair could rally toward 0.0312, according to technical analyst Aksel Kibar.
ETH/BTC breakout signals broader institutional shift
The ETH/BTC pair's breakout from its multi-month capitulation reflects a broader shift in institutional crypto allocation. Combined BTC exposure across trusts, ETFs, and closed-end funds has fallen from 1.33 million to 1.20 million BTC over three months, according to CryptoQuant data. The Coinbase Premium Index has also been negative for a record 93 days, indicating muted US institutional buying pressure on Bitcoin.
The rotation pattern at BlackRock — the world's largest asset manager with over $11.5 trillion in AUM — carries outsized weight in crypto markets. Its IBIT and ETHA products are among the most liquid institutional vehicles for digital asset exposure, and their flows are closely tracked by traders as a proxy for institutional demand. The divergence between the two funds' holdings suggests ETF investors are actively rebalancing their digital asset allocations rather than exiting the asset class entirely.
This rebalancing comes as the broader Bitcoin treasury model faces scrutiny. Strategy, the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, sold 1,638 BTC last week, and analysis from CryptoQuant contributor Novaque Research warns that the reflexive financing loop that once boosted Bitcoin demand is weakening as market capitalizations fall below net asset value. Citi has also cut its BTC price forecast to $53,000 through 2027, citing ETF flows as an important driver of prices.
If the rotation from Bitcoin to Ethereum persists, Ethereum could continue to gain relative strength against Bitcoin, while Bitcoin's price may face headwinds from reduced institutional accumulation. The next key level to watch is the 0.0312 ETH/BTC resistance, which would represent a further 5.5 percent gain from current levels. For Bitcoin, the record-negative Coinbase Premium suggests US institutional buying remains muted, and a sustained flip to positive readings would be needed to signal renewed accumulation.
