Bitcoin fell 3.8% to $72,800 as U.S.-Iran airstrikes and a hot PCE reading drove $930 million in liquidations across crypto markets.
"On the higher lookback, we continue stairwelling down, taking another large long liq cluster," Hyblock Capital analysts said in a post on X.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $733 million in net outflows Wednesday, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust shedding $528 million — the second-largest single-day withdrawal since the fund's January 2024 debut, according to SoSoValue data. Total liquidations reached $930.55 million across 165,000 traders, with long positions accounting for $871 million of that total, per CoinGlass.
The $70,000 to $72,000 zone now represents the final line of defense for the bullish structure. A confirmed break below that range opens the door to mid-$60,000 territory, while a defense of the level could spark a recovery toward $80,000 over the coming weeks.
The buying activity that emerged as BTC dipped below $73,000 offers a counterpoint to the institutional exodus. The BTC/USDT bid-ask ratio on Hyblock, set to 10% order-book depth, turned positive at 0.03 for the first time since April 12, showing that bids are dominating order books at current levels. On Binance, spot dip buyers generated $185.58 million in cumulative volume over 10 hours, with futures adding another $62.8 million, according to TRDR.io data.
The retail long accounts metric, which tracks the percentage of futures accounts holding long positions, climbed above 64%. Hyblock data shows that 88% of 15-minute candles where retail longs exceeded 64% produced positive seven-day forward returns.
$150 Billion Liquidity Drain Looms
The retail bid faces a formidable macro backdrop. A Treasury operation running from May 28 to June 5 is expected to drain roughly $150 billion in liquidity, a fund manager warned, according to CoinDesk. The Personal Consumption Expenditure index rose to 3.8% in April, its highest level since 2023, reducing the likelihood of Federal Reserve rate cuts that risk assets have been pricing in.
The U.S.-Iran conflict added another layer of uncertainty. Brent crude jumped nearly 4% to around $96 per barrel after the latest round of airstrikes, fueling inflation concerns that could keep the Fed on hold. On Polymarket, odds of a permanent ceasefire by month-end fell to 8% from a weekend peak of 70%.
Bitcoin's 50-week exponential moving average sits at $84,000, well above current prices, and the absence of RSI divergences on the weekly chart suggests no clear directional signal. The next core support to monitor is $68,000, according to CoinDesk technical analysis.
