Fairshake's $10M Campaign Fails to Secure Senate Seat
On March 17, the cryptocurrency industry's political spending power was dealt a significant blow in the Illinois Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate. Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton defeated Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, a candidate who received nearly $10 million in support from the crypto-focused super-PAC Fairshake. The vast majority of Fairshake's spending was directed at negative advertising against Stratton, a strategy that ultimately proved ineffective. Given that the Cook Political Report rates the Illinois Senate seat as "Solid Democratic," Stratton's primary victory makes her the presumptive next senator from the state.
This outcome challenges the narrative of the crypto lobby's growing invincibility in Washington. The defeat is particularly notable because of the clear divergence between the candidates on digital asset policy. Stand With Crypto, a Coinbase-backed advocacy group, gave Stratton an "F" rating for her perceived anti-crypto stance, while Krishnamoorthi received an "A" for his supportive voting record. The failure of such a substantial financial campaign in a key primary suggests a potential ceiling on the crypto industry's ability to influence electoral outcomes.
Crypto Lobby Records Mixed Results in Other Races
While the Senate primary was a major loss, Fairshake's performance across other Illinois races on Tuesday was mixed. The PAC saw success with three of its backed candidates for the House of Representatives: Donna Miller (IL-2), Melissa Bean (IL-8), and incumbent Nikki Budzinski (IL-13). Fairshake's spending in these races was more modest, including approximately $560,000 to support Bean and less than $84,000 for Budzinski. However, the group also spent nearly $2 million unsuccessfully opposing La Shawn Ford, who won his primary for the 7th District House seat.
Despite the prominent Senate defeat, Fairshake signaled its intent to remain a major force in U.S. politics. In a statement following the primaries, the group focused on its victories and its long-term goals.
We’re proud to take on tough fights at this critical moment for American innovation and consumers. Tonight, Illinois voters have elected more pro-crypto members of Congress and we are just getting started in our nationwide fight for American innovation.
