Supermicro's Q4 gross margin surged to 17.6 percent, a 750-basis-point jump that blew past guidance, but management said the improvement is temporary.
CFO David Weigand said favorable mix contributed approximately 75 percent of the gross margin improvement, with the remainder from lower tariff costs and lower inventory reserves, which he called a "non-recurring event."
Revenue came in at $11.12 billion, up 93.2 percent year over year but near the low end of the $11 billion to $12.5 billion range on customer readiness delays. Non-GAAP EPS was $1.70 versus a $0.9575 consensus estimate. The mix was inflated by the deferral of several contracts from Q4 fiscal year 2026 into Q1 fiscal year 2027, pushing lower-margin revenue out of the quarter.
Shares closed at $39.59, up 25.8 percent over one month, after the August earnings release. Management guided current-quarter gross margin to 10.4 percent to 10.8 percent, well below the reported 17.6 percent. A quiet period begins at the close of business September 11.
CEO Charles Liang cited more than $60 billion in new orders and record backlog entering fiscal 2027, with full-year revenue guidance of $65 billion to $72 billion. Customer diversification is genuine: Weigand noted nine customers with revenue greater than $1 billion each in fiscal year 2026, versus four in fiscal year 2025. Full-year revenue reached $39.06 billion, up 77.8 percent year over year.
The offsetting concern is cash. Fiscal 2026 operating cash flow was negative $6.81 billion, closing inventory rose to $12.9 billion, and the cash conversion cycle lengthened materially. Supermicro raised $5.6 billion in public equity, including $4.2 billion in mandatory convertible preferred shares, and guided a non-GAAP diluted share count of 761 million.
The margin gap matters beyond Supermicro. Dell Technologies is up 320 percent year to date and Hewlett Packard Enterprise is up 118 percent, while SMCI has gained 35 percent. Both peers turned AI demand into operating cash this year, while Supermicro's negative cash flow and transitory margin step-up leave the stock trading at a discount to its AI-server rivals.
The thesis will be tested in the Q1 fiscal 2027 report, when revenue guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion and non-GAAP EPS of $1.01 to $1.10 must land in the upper half of both ranges while gross margin holds near the 10.4 percent to 10.8 percent guide. Any quarter in which revenue grows and gross margin lands at or below the prior-year level would disprove the current valuation.
