Intuitive Machines has won its second NASA low Earth orbit science contract, deploying the IM 300 spacecraft bus for the EAGLE-VSWIR Earth observation mission targeted for a 2028 launch, deepening the Houston company's government pipeline.
"NASA's science missions are being asked to deliver faster and inside tighter cost caps, and that is exactly the problem our platforms solve," Anand Mahendra, chief growth officer at Intuitive Machines, said.
The EAGLE-VSWIR mission (Explorer for Artemis Geology, Lunar, and Earth – Visible to Shortwave Infrared) will carry a hyperspectral instrument developed at JPL to study surface biology and geology from orbit while testing technologies for future lunar and Mars missions. Intuitive Machines will deliver the IM 300 platform, integrate the VSWIR instrument, and manage mission operations and ground segment. The award follows the EDGE mission, for which the company provides an IM 500 bus for NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, led by principal investigator Dr. Helen Amanda Fricker of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.
The win extends a run of government contract awards for Intuitive Machines, which reported $206.2 million in Q2 revenue, up 310 percent year over year, and a record $1.8 billion backlog. The company was selected Aug. 4 by L3Harris to deliver 18 IM 300 platforms for missile-tracking satellites, and on Aug. 17 received authorization to begin work on a multi-satellite communications program valued at more than $600 million.
The IM 300 series has customers across national security and civil programs, according to the company. The L3Harris selection for 18 spacecraft platforms shows the bus's versatility beyond NASA science missions. Intuitive Machines' "Build, Connect, Operate" model is designed to compete for contracts that require rapid delivery under tight cost caps, a growing priority for NASA's Earth Science Division as it shifts toward smaller, faster missions.
The EAGLE-VSWIR award also marks a strategic expansion for Intuitive Machines, which has built its reputation on lunar landers through its IM-1 and IM-2 missions. The company's push into Earth orbit science missions diversifies its revenue base beyond lunar exploration, giving it exposure to NASA's broader science portfolio. The mission name itself — Explorer for Artemis Geology, Lunar, and Earth — ties directly to NASA's Artemis program, where Intuitive Machines is already a key contractor.
The contract win puts Intuitive Machines in direct competition with established space contractors and newer entrants. SpaceX, Rocket Lab, and Sierra Space all compete for NASA science and defense contracts, but Intuitive Machines' vertically integrated approach — manufacturing spacecraft buses, operating ground stations, and managing missions — gives it a differentiated position. The company's recent acquisitions of Goonhilly Earth Station and COMSAT expanded its ground-station communications network, strengthening its end-to-end capabilities.
Intuitive Machines reported Q2 revenue of $206.2 million, up 309.77 percent from the prior-year period, and ended the quarter with a record $1.8 billion backlog. The company's market cap stands at $3.27 billion. Wall Street analysts have issued a median price target of $41.00, with Roth Capital's Suji Desilva setting the highest target at $75.00 on May 28. Cantor Fitzgerald's Andres Sheppard set a $43.00 target on May 19, while B. Riley Securities' Mike Crawford set $45.00 on May 15.
Institutional investors have taken notice. Advent International added 22.99 million shares in Q2 2026, while 217 institutions increased their positions and 142 reduced them. The company's active S-3ASR shelf, effective through June 2029, provides financing flexibility as it scales production of the IM 300 and IM 500 buses.
The VSWIR instrument will capture data across hundreds of narrow spectral bands, enabling scientists to identify mineral compositions and vegetation health from orbit. This type of hyperspectral imaging has applications beyond Earth science — the same technology could support resource mapping on the Moon and Mars, aligning with NASA's long-term exploration goals.
The EAGLE-VSWIR award, combined with the $600 million-plus communications program and the L3Harris selection, gives Intuitive Machines multiple revenue streams through the end of the decade. With analyst targets ranging from $22.00 to $75.00, the market appears to be pricing in continued contract momentum, though execution on the 2028 launch timeline remains the key risk. The company's stock ranks among the top 42 monthly gainers on the market, reflecting investor confidence in its expanding government pipeline.
