OpenAI plans to terminate Cursor's direct model access by Nov. 12, citing trust concerns after SpaceX's $60 billion acquisition, a decision that reshapes the competitive field for AI developer tools.
"We unfortunately have decided that we cannot continue providing access to our models through Cursor and are ending our partnership. It boils down to trust," Tibo, OpenAI's head of core products, said on X. "Many have used the GPT models through Cursor, and we've asked that this takes effect on November 12 to give you some time to plan."
The company said it is using the maximum notice period permitted under its contract, giving developers until Nov. 12 to transition. OpenAI cited earlier disputes with Elon Musk's companies — including Twitter, which it describes as now part of SpaceX, and xAI — over terms-of-service violations. Future models, including the upcoming Astra, will not be added to Cursor's direct arrangement during the notice period.
The split leaves Cursor, which SpaceX acquired in mid-August for roughly $60 billion and integrated into SpaceXAI, without the privileged GPT integration that helped establish it as a leading AI coding assistant. Developers can still connect OpenAI models through their own API keys, and OpenAI will continue offering IDE extensions for Cursor, but the direct partnership that defined Cursor's early growth is ending.
OpenAI said the decision stems from whether it can trust SpaceX to follow the contractual and safety conditions attached to using its technology at scale. The company said it "cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service," pointing to earlier disputes involving Musk's companies.
OpenAI said Twitter broke the terms of an earlier contract after Musk acquired the platform, and that Musk acknowledged under oath earlier in 2026 that xAI had violated OpenAI's terms of service. Those disputes matter because large partners normally operate under custom agreements designed to enforce terms and provide safety controls at scale, OpenAI said.
The company also cited its upcoming Astra model as a reason for drawing a line around future access. Advancing AI capabilities create a higher level of accountability over how new models are used, OpenAI said, and it needs confidence that partners will operate within its terms. That separates the November deadline from access to upcoming models — Cursor can retain the existing direct arrangement during the contractual notice period, but OpenAI's next generation of models will not be part of it.
Community reaction split between the companies' rivalry and what the decision means for Cursor's competitive position. Some questioned whether a coding tool built around third-party models can maintain an advantage as competing editors add similar features. Others argued that Cursor offers more than model access through its codebase awareness, editor context, agent tools, and its own Composer model.
Several developers noted that the surrounding coding harness may now matter as much as the underlying LLM, especially since Cursor users will still be able to connect OpenAI models through their own API keys. OpenAI said it intends to keep supporting a broad range of developer tools and harnesses, including both open-source and closed-source projects, while continuing to invest in its own open-source initiatives.
The next key date is Nov. 12, 2026. If the proposed cancellation takes effect, Cursor's direct OpenAI model access will end, while developers will still be able to connect through their own OpenAI API keys and OpenAI's Cursor-compatible IDE extensions. SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
For investors, the split highlights the intensifying rivalry between OpenAI and Musk's SpaceXAI, which now controls Cursor and powers models like Grok 4.6. The outcome could benefit competing model providers such as Anthropic, whose Claude models are already integrated into Cursor, as developers weigh alternative model access within the tool. OpenAI said it has worked with Cursor for nearly four years and wants to support developers through the transition.
