Japan built a functioning banking system on XRP roughly 10 years ago while the rest of the world spent years debating the legal status of cryptocurrencies, according to an infographic published by Evernorth analysts.
"Japan launched the regulatory and infrastructure processes a decade ago whose benefits it is now harvesting," Evernorth analysts wrote in the analysis, which breaks down how the country positioned itself ahead of global peers in cryptocurrency adoption for financial systems.
The country's early embrace of XRP (CRYPTO:XRP) on the XRP Ledger stands in contrast to the token's current price performance. XRP trades at $1.05 as of 14:30 UTC, down 43% from its January open of $1.84, according to CoinGecko. The token is at its cheapest in 20 months, a level last seen in November 2024.
Japan's approach began with a clear regulatory framework that allowed financial institutions to experiment with XRP for cross-border settlements while other major economies — including the US — remained in legal limbo. Ripple's On-Demand Liquidity service, which uses XRP as a bridge currency between fiat pairs, found early traction with Japanese banks and remittance firms. The country's Financial Services Agency classified XRP as a payment instrument rather than a security, a distinction the US Securities and Exchange Commission has still not formally adopted.
The timing matters because Japan's early-mover advantage in crypto banking infrastructure now faces a crowded field. The US Senate is set to vote on the CLARITY Act before the August recess, a bill that could establish clear digital asset regulations and potentially unlock institutional demand for XRP. Standard Chartered has projected XRP could reach $28 by 2030, a forecast that would value 917 tokens — the amount a $1,000 investment buys at today's price — at roughly $25,700.
Three AI models surveyed by 24/7 Wall St. offered more conservative targets. ChatGPT forecast $5.80 by 2030, Gemini projected $3.80, and Claude estimated $1.75, with the latter citing the roughly 20% supply dilution expected as Ripple releases tokens from escrow. All three recommended holding the position.
Japan's head start, however, does not guarantee XRP's price follows the infrastructure. Mastercard added the XRP Ledger to its list of eight blockchains for card settlement in June, and tokenized assets on the ledger grew 388% to $4.4 billion. Yet the XRP price fell through all of those developments. The question for holders is whether Japan's decade-old bet on XRP infrastructure eventually translates into the demand that the price has so far failed to reflect.
