Four altcoins — BNB, XRP, Solana and HYPE — carried a combined 92.7% of the indicative weight in CME Group's new emerging crypto index, which launched Aug 31 alongside a broader market benchmark that includes bitcoin and ether.
The CME CF Emerging Crypto Index tracks 10 assets beyond BTC and ETH, using free-float market-cap weighting with semi-annual reviews each June and December, according to CF Benchmarks' methodology document. The companion CME CF Crypto Market Index holds the same 10 assets plus bitcoin and ether, giving institutions a broad-market gauge alongside the altcoin-focused benchmark.
CF Benchmarks' Aug 13 research portfolio assigned BNB a 32.0% indicative weight, XRP 27.6%, Solana 18.5% and HYPE 14.6%, leaving 7.3% for all remaining constituents. The weights are research estimates rather than the confirmed Aug 31 constituent file, but they illustrate how capitalization weighting concentrates influence in the largest eligible tokens even after removing BTC and ETH.
Both indices update approximately once per second, 24 hours a day, with daily settlement variants published at 4 p.m. in London, New York and Singapore/Hong Kong. CF Benchmarks administers both under UK Financial Conduct Authority regulation, giving the benchmarks a compliance framework institutions typically require before adopting a pricing standard.
The emerging index's methodology requires access to custody, excludes meme coins and applies a protocol-usage screen based on total value locked relative to full market capitalization. Assets not yet eligible under U.S. national stock exchange generic listing standards for crypto exchange-traded products can enter at a maximum combined weight of 10% if expected to comply within 30 days.
Concentration by design
The heavy concentration follows the index's construction rules rather than an equal-weight approach. Full market capitalization determines which eligible assets enter, while free-float capitalization determines their weights, reducing the influence of locked or closely held supply. Rank buffers limit unnecessary turnover when assets hover near the selection cutoff, making the December review the first test of how readily leadership changes enter the benchmark.
Neither index currently settles a CME contract, and no futures contract, ETF or investment fund accompanied the debut. The benchmarks function as measurement tools for portfolio valuation and regional performance comparison, not as products that automatically channel capital into constituent tokens. A separate product announcement would be required to tie a fund or derivative to either index.
The launch extends CME's crypto benchmark buildout following the Nasdaq CME Crypto Index futures that began trading in June. For institutions tracking the altcoin market, the emerging index provides a regulated reference point — though the 92.7% concentration in four tokens means the benchmark's direction will largely track BNB, XRP, Solana and HYPE until the December review.
