Zcash's decade-high rally is showing its first serious cracks, with three chart signals now pointing to a 20% to 25% correction that would take ZEC back to $900–$1,000 from its post-rally peak.
The setup rests on a rising wedge, a bearish divergence between price and momentum, and an overbought relative strength index — the same combination that preceded sharp reversals in previous ZEC cycles. A rising wedge forms when price makes higher highs on narrowing range, and it typically resolves downward once buyers exhaust themselves. The divergence adds weight: ZEC kept printing higher highs while momentum failed to confirm them, a classic sign that the advance was running on positioning rather than fresh demand.
Derivatives data shows how crowded that positioning became. ZEC's futures open interest climbed to an all-time high near $2.4 billion during the rally, according to Coinalyze, with short sellers absorbing roughly $34 million in forced closures as the token broke higher. Altcoin perpetual futures collectively carried more open interest than Bitcoin's on September 6 — the first such flip since December 2024 — and Zcash drove most of that shift.
"The buildup echoes conditions from October 2025," Michael Bucella, co-founder and managing partner at Neoclassic Capital, said on CNBC's Halftime Report. "I'm not saying that this move isn't sustainable. I'm just saying you should proceed with a lot of caution." Bucella described Bitcoin's own advance as comparatively healthy because it is anchored in spot demand rather than pure short covering.
That distinction matters for ZEC. When open interest sits at a record and the move higher has been fueled partly by shorts being squeezed, the fuel for further upside thins out. Each forced buy removes a future buyer. If price stalls, the same leverage that accelerated the rally can accelerate the unwind, and longs that entered near the top become the next liquidation cohort.
The technical case hinges on the wedge's lower boundary. A decisive close below that trendline would confirm the pattern and open the path toward $900–$1,000, a zone that previously acted as resistance before the breakout. That range represents a 20% to 25% decline from current levels and would erase a meaningful slice of the rally.
Momentum indicators support the bearish read. An RSI that has spent an extended stretch above 70 signals that buyers have been paying up without pause — a condition that historically resolves through consolidation or a sharp pullback rather than a gentle drift. The bearish divergence reinforces it: price strength without momentum confirmation rarely sustains.
The bullish invalidation is equally clear. A close back above the wedge's upper boundary, accompanied by RSI resetting lower without price breaking down, would suggest the pattern is failing and the uptrend remains intact. Until then, the burden of proof sits with the bulls.
Zcash's rally has drawn attention beyond the charts. Grayscale has filed to convert its ZEC trust into a spot ETF, adding a structural demand channel that did not exist during prior cycles. That filing gives long-term holders a reason to look past a short-term correction, and it distinguishes this setup from a purely speculative spike.
The near-term risk, though, is that an ETF filing is a slow-moving catalyst while leverage unwinds in hours. Ether and tokens tied to Robinhood's new blockchain have also outperformed, with Pons, a memecoin launchpad on that chain, fueling a fresh wave of token launches. Traders are rotating leverage further down the risk stack as Bitcoin's rally matures — a pattern that leaves the most crowded altcoin books exposed first.
Bitcoin's ETF-backed bid has held up despite a brief late-August outflow streak, per BeInCrypto's September warning signs. Whether altcoin leverage unwinds as calmly is the open question for the rest of September. For ZEC specifically, the next few sessions will decide whether the wedge resolves into the $900–$1,000 target or the rally finds a second leg.
