XRP's on-chain activity jumped 655% as a US Treasury bond buyback injected liquidity, pushing the token to its best weekly gain since November 2024.

XRP rose 71% to $1.699 on Aug. 22, its highest level since January, after active addresses on the XRP Ledger jumped 654.71% from 47,180 to 356,070, according to data shared by crypto analyst Ali Charts. The token traded around $1.48 as of 12:00 UTC on Aug. 25, up roughly 49% over seven days, outpacing Bitcoin's 24% weekly gain and Ethereum's 31% rise.
"This kind of spike generally signals a sharp rise in network participation and is often accompanied by higher price volatility," Ali Charts said in a post on X.
The rally followed the US Treasury's announcement of a $4 billion buyback of long-term bonds maturing in 10 to 30 years, which injected liquidity into markets and cleared a significant portion of short-seller positions. XRP climbed from a low of $0.99 on Aug. 19 to a local high of $1.699 three days later, before pulling back to consolidate near $1.48.
The options market on Coinbase is pricing an expected move of ±13.1% for XRP by the Aug. 30 expiration, the highest volatility premium among major cryptocurrencies, according to Coinbase Markets. That compares with ±11.2% for Solana, ±9.7% for Ethereum and ±6.7% for Bitcoin, with XRP's premium running 2.65 times its seven-day median variation.
Futures open interest climbed to $3.72 billion as of Aug. 24, with 24-hour futures volume of $8.84 billion against $1.89 billion in spot trading, according to CoinGlass. The disparity points to heavy leveraged positioning that could amplify swings near resistance.
US spot XRP exchange-traded funds registered $39.78 million in net inflows during the Aug. 17-21 week, the strongest weekly performance since May, lifting cumulative net inflows to about $1.55 billion, according to data compiled by Blockonomi. Bitwise, Grayscale and Franklin led Friday's roughly $18 million in activity.
Exchange outflows hit a six-month high as more XRP moved to cold storage, reducing selling pressure, while the XRP Ledger's active addresses surged 659%. The network is also adding native lending and privacy features through new amendments, giving retail and institutional holders direct access to DeFi services.
XRP faces critical resistance at $1.55, a level where buyers have failed multiple times this year, with $1.80 seen as the next confirmation point if the breakout holds, according to market observers. Support has formed around $1.45. The concentrated open interest near current price levels exposes the market to forced liquidations if momentum fades, while a sustained breakout could lift broader altcoin sentiment, as seen in Stellar's 26% weekly gain.
