The TON bridge shut down September 1, leaving 11.34 million Wrapped TON tokens stranded on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain.
The figure comes from cryptoticker.io's own on-chain measurement at 06:56 UTC on the deadline, querying the total issued supply of both Wrapped TON contracts across the two networks. The stranded supply splits roughly 81.9 percent on Ethereum and 18.1 percent on BNB Smart Chain. Redemptions on Ethereum totaled 236,588.24 tokens across 74 transactions in the two weeks before the cut-off, with movement concentrated on August 20-21 after trade press coverage. On the last full day before the deadline, only 3,757.41 tokens came back — less than a tenth of a typical mid-August daily redemption.
Holders who missed the deadline now hold a proxy token whose redemption route no longer exists. The market price of Wrapped TON on secondary venues will trade at whatever discount buyers assign to the uncertainty of whether the operator reopens the bridge — a scenario that could also pressure the broader TON DeFi ecosystem on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain.
The shutdown was announced May 23, 2026, when the bridge operator said it would permanently retire version 3 at bridge-v3.ton.org. Bridge fees were waived for the transition period, and September 1 was set as the hard cut-off. Two directions were affected: Wrapped TON on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain returning to the TON network, and j-tokens (jUSDT, jUSDC, jDAI, jWBTC) on TON returning to Ethereum.
The announcement moved barely anything. Comparing cryptoticker.io's August 21 count of 11,476,155.84 wrapped tokens to the September 1 measurement of 11,344,908.81 shows only 131,247.03 tokens — about 1.1 percent — returned in the final eleven days. On two of the last four days before the deadline, not a single token was redeemed on Ethereum.
Across Ethereum blocks 25,779,977 to 25,880,777 (August 19 to September 1), cryptoticker.io counted 74 redemptions covering 236,588.24 tokens. The weight fell on August 20 and 21, the days trade press picked up the story. After that, movement dried up almost entirely.
The j-token side on TON could not be measured with the same tools, but the same deadline applied. Anyone holding jUSDT, jUSDC, jDAI or jWBTC on TON also held proxies whose original collateral sits on Ethereum, locked by the same bridge.
A wrapped token is a receipt. Its value consists entirely of the claim to get the locked original back. Remove the redemption route and what remains is a token that looks identical but has lost the function it was built for. The Ethereum contract is 0x582d872A1B094FC48F5DE31D3B73F2D9bE47def1, and its public contract page shows the same total supply on which this analysis rests.
The bridge-v3.ton.org interface still responded with a regular page at 06:57 UTC on September 1, but a reachable web interface is no proof the contracts behind it still settle. Holders who attempt the return trip today may find the process breaks off, and the network fee is a possible loss. Documenting balances with screenshots and address identifiers before anything changes is the only basis for any later enquiry with an operator.
The shutdown is one of several infrastructure deadlines in September 2026. LayerZero dropped 15 chains on August 28, and the ICON blockchain swap window closes September 30. The pattern is consistent: an announcement, a generous period, a cut-off date, and a remainder that stays put. The TON bridge's 1.1 percent redemption rate in the final eleven days is a data point on how little such announcements move balances on their own.
For the Toncoin protocol itself, the changeover carries no direct implication — what is affected is the redemption route of a proxy, not the underlying chain. But for the 11.34 million Wrapped TON holders on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, the value of their holdings now depends entirely on whether anyone reopens the door.
