Tenable Holdings is pushing deeper into AI-driven exposure management as the cybersecurity company tries to prove its Tenable One platform can deliver more value than traditional vulnerability scanning tools. The bet comes as competitors from Qualys to Palo Alto Networks crowd into adjacent security categories.
"Customers are dealing with more assets, more vulnerabilities and more cloud complexity than ever before," Amit Yoran, chief executive officer at Tenable, said on the company's most recent earnings call. "Unified visibility and contextual prioritization are what separate a platform from a point tool."
Tenable One accounted for 41% of new business in the fiscal first quarter, up 800 basis points from a year earlier. The company added 406 enterprise platform customers and 43 net new six-figure accounts in the period, with a net dollar expansion rate of 105%. Management also cited a seven-figure Tenable One transaction with a major financial institution in the Middle East where Tenable displaced an incumbent vulnerability management vendor.
The shift from legacy scanning to platform-based exposure management is central to Tenable's growth story. The company's Tenable One platform integrates vulnerability management, cloud security, identity exposure, operational technology security, web application scanning and attack surface management into a single view. Legacy products such as Nessus remain available as stand-alone offerings, keeping the company connected to its vulnerability management roots while the platform business scales.
Tenable's AI strategy centers on Hexa AI, an agentic orchestration engine designed to automate triage and remediation workflows. The company has also integrated Anthropic's Claude into Hexa AI and joined OpenAI's Trusted Access for Cyber program, bringing frontier model capabilities directly into the platform. Management has pointed to the rapid advancement of AI models as evidence that vulnerability discovery is accelerating at a scale that demands faster prioritization and response.
Acquisitions have widened the platform. Tenable acquired Vulcan Cyber in 2025 to add cyber risk management capabilities and Apex Security to expand AI attack surface security. The company also introduced Flex pricing in the first quarter, applying consistent per-asset pricing across asset types to reduce procurement friction as customers expand across the attack surface.
The competitive field remains broad. Qualys and Rapid7 operate primarily around vulnerability management, while Palo Alto Networks has scaled its platform out of network security and cloud security. CrowdStrike and Wiz compete from endpoint and cloud security respectively. Tenable's task is to show that Tenable One and Hexa AI create a broader operating model rather than simply adding another AI feature to a scanning tool.
Tenable still faces execution risks. The company generated 94% of its 2025 revenue through channel partners, with one distributor accounting for 32% of revenue and 28% of accounts receivable. International exposure adds another variable — 39% of revenue came from outside the Americas in 2025, with 27% from Europe, the Middle East and Africa and 12% from Asia Pacific. Currency movements can affect reported growth even when underlying demand remains intact.
Truist downgraded Tenable to Hold from Buy on July 21, with the firm describing the risk-reward profile as "more balanced." The stock fell more than 4.5% in premarket trading on the news. TENB currently carries a Zacks Rank of 4 (Sell), reflecting weaker near-term earnings estimate revision momentum. The consensus estimate for 2026 earnings per share stands at $1.95, unchanged over the past 30 days and implying 22.64% year-over-year growth.
Tenable shares trade at about 19 times forward earnings with a market capitalization of $4.16 billion. The company's VGM Score of A and Growth Score of A point to strong momentum, but the Value Score of D and the Zacks Sell rating signal caution around near-term earnings trends. For investors, the question is whether Tenable's platform transition can outrun the competitive pressure and deliver the durable revenue growth that the current valuation has not yet fully priced in.
