Rakuten is plugging XRP into its 100 million-member ecosystem in Japan, letting users convert Rakuten Points into XRP and spend it as Rakuten Cash.
The integration gives XRP a direct path from rewards points to consumer spending, Yasuo Matsuda, senior analyst at Rakuten Wallet, said on Ripple's Onchain Economy podcast.
Rakuten Wallet has offered XRP margin trading since 2020, but customers repeatedly asked for spot access, Matsuda said. The addition of spot XRP lets users move from the token into Rakuten Cash and spend the balance at participating merchants, including Rakuten Pay and Rakuten Ichiba.
Rakuten's reach of more than 100 million members — roughly 80 percent of Japan's population — gives XRP one of its widest consumer-payment touchpoints, testing whether the token can move beyond its traditional role as a trading asset.
The conversion flow — Rakuten Points to XRP to Rakuten Cash — removes friction for users already inside Rakuten's ecosystem, who do not need to move to an unfamiliar platform to access the token. Matsuda highlighted XRP's transaction speed and liquidity as factors that make it practical for payments and remittances.
Matsuda also drew a distinction between XRP and stablecoins, suggesting the two could serve different functions as financial institutions explore tokenized real-world assets and security tokens. Stablecoins can represent fiat value digitally, while XRP could help move liquidity across markets and currencies, he said. The emerging on-chain economy may not be about a single asset doing everything — multiple assets could work together within the same financial infrastructure.
The Rakuten integration is more than a routine exchange listing. It connects XRP to a consumer ecosystem where value can flow from rewards points into crypto and back into everyday spending. If the model gains traction, it could become a tangible example of XRP utility at the consumer level — a different proposition from holding the token on an exchange.
RippleX, the development arm of Ripple, promoted the integration on social media, pointing to Rakuten's scale as a key factor in expanding XRP's everyday use case. The move also strengthens XRP's position as a payment-focused cryptocurrency, potentially attracting further enterprise partnerships in Japan and beyond. For XRP holders, the integration creates a real-world spending channel that could support sustained demand beyond speculative trading, while giving Rakuten's large user base a low-barrier entry point into crypto ownership.
The development comes as Japan's crypto market matures, with major corporations increasingly integrating digital assets into existing consumer services. Rakuten's move could set a precedent for how other large platforms in Asia approach crypto payments, potentially accelerating XRP's adoption across the region.
