Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled the "Lean Ethereum" roadmap on Aug. 10, placing privacy features and quantum resistance at the top of the protocol's third major iteration, according to The Block.
Buterin previously said the upgrades included in Lean Ethereum will form the protocol's "third major iteration," the report said.
The roadmap targets two technical fronts. Privacy features aim to strengthen transaction confidentiality on Ethereum, addressing one of the most persistent criticisms of public blockchains: fully transparent ledgers. Quantum resistance prepares the network for a future in which quantum computers could break the elliptic-curve cryptography that underpins most digital assets, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The update could strengthen Ethereum's standing against other Layer 1 protocols as investors weigh the network's technical roadmap. The "third major iteration" framing points to a multi-year upgrade cycle, with privacy and post-quantum security expected to roll out across successive network upgrades.
