Altcoins added roughly $215 billion in market value between Aug 19 and Aug 22, pushing Total2 — the combined market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies excluding Bitcoin — back above the $1 trillion threshold.
The breadth of the move matched its size. On Binance, 56 percent of altcoins now trade above their 200-day moving average, a sharp reversal from a stretch when 80 to 85 percent of tokens sat below that level, according to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost. Total2 climbed more than 24 percent over the three-day period.
Zcash was the week's biggest winner among top-50 assets, rising 71.3 percent to trade near $832. XRP climbed 48.7 percent to about $1.47, one of its strongest weekly performances in recent memory, while Hyperliquid gained 38.4 percent with HYPE near $80. Pump.fun rose 81 percent over the week after announcing zero trading fees on Solana tokens, an aggressive push against rival FOMO.
The rally extended to the majors. Bitcoin gained more than 20 percent to trade near $77,000, breaking above $70,000 for the first time since June, while Ethereum rose a similar amount to about $2,437. Solana climbed 25.8 percent to roughly $94, Dogecoin added 31 percent and BNB gained just over 16 percent.
Breadth Improves, but Altseason Confirmation Lags
The move followed Donald Trump's Aug 19 White House summit with crypto executives and regulators, where he renewed pressure on Congress to advance digital-asset legislation, Reuters reported. The Senate postponed consideration of the CLARITY Act until September after lawmakers failed to reach agreement before the August recess.
Still, confirmation signals remain mixed. Bitcoin dominance stood near 59.7 percent on Aug 23, meaning BTC still accounts for a large share of total crypto capitalization. Traders typically want a deeper, sustained decline in that metric before declaring a broad rotation into smaller assets. The market also cooled after the surge, with total crypto capitalization falling about 5.5 percent over the previous 24 hours to roughly $2.57 trillion.
A procedural test on the CLARITY Act expected around Sept 15 could determine whether regulatory optimism extends the rotation. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao has argued that over a two-year horizon, the opportunity cost of staying sidelined from top altcoins outweighs the risk of buying before a confirmed bottom — a view that has aged well given how quickly this week's move developed.
Not every corner has caught up. Bittensor has traded in a tighter range in recent months and could be building toward its own breakout, while the broader AI token sector remains an area traders are watching for the next wave of momentum.
